Elly's soccer game this morning. For a split second I had pondered going to spin class until I remembered that it was a morning game this time. We are all hoping that the momentum she established at the last game continues. But who knows, this is Elly; anything is possible, from the "No, not this time" to the "Yes, I can't wait to get into the game" mentality that is a toss-up until she decides right there on the field. She inserts her own parameters and we never know until the moment whether they fit into ours. Regardless, her perspectives are so interesting and, like a human subject study, filled with variations from the norm which need to be documented or they will be forgotten. Like her observation this week as she sat on the potty that the flowers in the bathroom were "boo-tiful." It was a statement of the beauty of nature observed.
Our time with Maddy was a treasury of smiles and squeals and cries and naptimes. Toby was jealous of this little intruder and barked at her, setting off her cries on the first day; but by the second, Maddy would be on the floor, holding her own with Toby. He was conflicted throughout all her time here, enjoying her but not always appreciating her presence. Poppi, on the other hand, was delighted with her morning appearances, and on the last day engaged her in a photo shoot, the outcome of his efforts pronounced by him as "priceless." He misspoke; it was the subject who was priceless. In those few weeks we got to know Maddy up-close; we were wrong about her quiet nature...she is not, and she is carving her way into Elly's world and fitting herself seamlessly into the middle and a little to the right of Elly. We pray that their sisterly love will endure countless girly squabbles and competitive strivings, stitching and mending and doubleknotting where necessary to preserve the fit.
